POSITION:  Personal Care/Crisis Counselor (Full time - 196 day)
JOB DESCRIPTION:  

Primary Purpose:

The personal care/crisis counselor works with students, parents, and community resources. The personal care/crisis counselor's overall goal is to strengthen the education process of students who are experiencing the effects of substance abuse, crisis, or exhibiting behaviors of concern. This is accomplished through the development of a healthy school environment for students by providing counseling, support groups, classroom guidance, and crisis intervention.

Areas addressed could include:

  • Family Issues, Coping Skills, Healthy Relationships, Anger Management, Physical and Emotional Abuse, Stress, Grief and Loss, Depression, Self-injury, Suicide, Substance Abuse.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education/Certifications:

  • Master's Degree in Psychology, Counseling or Educational Administration
  • Current licensure or certification to provide counseling services such as LSSP, LPC, LMSW, or School Counselor.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  •  Knowledge and skills of a short-term therapeutic approach as it applies to individual, family, and group therapy. Knowledge and skills related to crisis intervention
  • Excellent organization and interpersonal skills
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Effective training skills in differentiation strategies
  • Knowledge of current research into effective practices and current trends and issues
  • Knowledge of current research in job-related areas and ability to translate research/theory into practice
  • Knowledge of a variety of instructional strategies such as cooperative learning, integrated instruction, learning styles, brain-based learning, etc.
  • Knowledge of current special education federal, state, and local guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Ability to work one-on-one with educators of various levels of knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of and ability to meet the needs of adult learners
  • Skill in project initiation and development
  • Ability to objectively evaluate data and provide pertinent feedback
  • Ability to plan and implement institutes, conferences, and sessions for large and small groups
  • Ability to lead, work on and enhance a team
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet timelines
  • Initiative in seeking out and responding to new opportunities
  • Ability to mentor other staff members
  • Ability to excel with minimal supervision
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Responsibilities and Duties Common to all Region 10 ESC Employees:

  • Ability to work on and enhance a team
  • Utilize time wisely for effective management of position responsibilities and to ensure timelines are met
  • Maintain punctuality in daily work times, appointments, and meetings
  • Maintain a positive, customer friendly, and professional tone in all communication (i.e. email, written, and verbal)
  • Participate as an effective team member who contributes to center-wide strategic planning goals
  • Display proficient levels of technology applications and remain current in the area of digital integration
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by Region 10 Leadership
  • Prepare and organize resources, train, and collaborate with Region 10 personnel
  • Exhibit initiative in identifying problems and suggesting solutions in a positive manner
  • Exhibit good judgment and decision making
  • Keep supervisor informed of program and district needs
  • Maintain up-to-date entries in Region 10 databases and accurate records for tracking and invoicing
  • Adhere to Center procedures, guidelines, and policies

 Responsibilities and Duties for the Personal Care/Crisis Counselor:

  • Provide individual, family, and group counseling to K12 students
  • Provide consultation with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant stakeholders to enhance work with students
  • Willingness to seek on-going development of professional skills as appropriate to the job assignment
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of evidence-based practices and current research
  • Sustain a depth of knowledge in desired field and integration of such practices
  • Remain current in research related to adult learners in order to meet their needs
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to assist administrators and teachers in serving students with diverse needs
  • Create and provide professional learning opportunities using a variety of delivery methods
  • Demonstrate effective coaching, mentoring, problem-solving and conferencing skills
  • Assist with implementation of statewide initiatives and/or directives
  • Provide information and collaborate with others to update and maintain website
  • Participate in team and center-wide activities
  • Observe all center policies and procedures and demonstrate flexibility to manage multiple responsibilities and varied tasks with minimal supervision
  • Perform other duties and functions as required
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:  
  • 3+ years working providing counseling services in a clinical or educational environment
  • Background in providing superior staff development at the local, state, and/or national level

 Accountability:

The Personal Care/Crisis Counselor shall be directly accountable to the Special Populations Program Coordinator or his/her designee.
